Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44KSR463x7I

Materials needed:

  • DK yarn in green and a colour of your choice for the flowers, I made them in lilac, purple and pink

  • 3mm crochet hook

  • Stitch marker

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

  • Pins to help with sewing

  • 18 gauge florist wire- comes in standard length- 36cm

  • Green florist tape (this is crepe paper with wax on it which becomes sticky from the warmth of your fingers and when stretched)

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

ch- chain

sl st- slip stitch

sc- single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

dc- double crochet

tr- treble crochet

inc- increase

invdec- invisible decrease

Outer petals- make 3:

Rnd 1: ch 14, starting in 3rd st from hook: dc in nxt 11 st, make 4 dc in last st, turn and work on other side of chain, dc in nxt 11 st (26)

Rnd 2: (Make sure you do the first sc into the top of the first dc and not the ch 2):

sc in nxt 3 st, hdc in nxt 2 st, dc in nxt 2 st, tr in nxt 2 st, dc in nxt 2 st, hdc in nxt 4 st, dc in nxt 2 st, tr in nxt 2 st, dc in nxt 2 st, hdc in nxt 2 st, sc in nxt 3 st, sl st in nxt st (26)

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

Weave the short tail from the slip knot into the back of the stitches on the inside of the petals, trim excess.

Inner piece (to give the appearance of inner petals):

Worked in continous spiral rounds with a stitch marker.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x6 (24)

Rnd 5: sc in every st (24)

Rnd 6: (sc in nxt 6 st, invdec) x3 (21)

Rnd 7: sc in every st (21)

Rnd 8: (sc in nxt 5 st, invdec) x3 (18)

Rnd 9: sc in every st (18)

Rnd 10: (sc in nxt 4 st, invdec) x3 (15)

Rnd 11: sc in every st (15)

Rnd 12: (sc in nxt st, dc in nxt st, tr in nxt st, dc in nxt st, sc in nxt st) x3 (15)

Fasten off leaving tail and weave tail into the back of the stitches on the inside, trim excess.

Assembly:

  • Arrange the 3 outer petals around the inner piece with the pointed ends at the top, and with the curved sections of rnd 12 going in between each gap of the outer petals. Pin each petal in place going through the bottom.

  • Weave the long tail from each petal through the back of the stitches on the inside edge, to the half way point of the length of the petal. Then sew the bottom half to the inner piece in a U shape by picking up loops on the surface of the inner piece and going through the loops on the back of the tall stitches on the inside of the petals. Fasten off by finding a loop nearby, go through it but not all the way, leave a loop and go through it, pull tight to make a knot. Weave tail inside middle piece. Sew the other 2 petals on in the same way, the bottom should have rnd 1 of the inner piece still visible.

  • Push the stem through the middle of rnd 1 (where you started with the magic ring), make a bend 5cm from the end that's sticking out of the top, bend it downwards so that it's straight next to the long piece, then push it back through the middle of the flower and push the short end out through the bottom between rnds 1 and 2.

  • Wrap the tape tightly all the way around the stem starting at the top, wrapping around the short and long piece. Cut it at the end and wrap the end around the end of the stem.

  • Take the green yarn and start tightly wrapping it around the stem leaving a long piece at the start free to use for sewing to the flower later on, wind it all the way down the stem- make sure you do this as soon as you've wrapped the tape around the stem because the stickiness will help the yarn to stick to it. When you reach the end, cut the yarn leaving about 2cm, then fold that upwards and use a small piece of tape to wrap around the end tightly to cover that short piece.

  • Thread the tail from the starting piece onto your needle and go through loops on rnd 1 of the flower and back through the green loop that's wrapped around the top of the stem, do this for several stitches so that the flower doesn't wobble. Fasten off in the same way as usual by finding a loop nearby, weave end through the middle and trim excess, push end inside.

Leaf:

In green:

Rnd 1: ch 32, starting in 3rd st from hook: dc in nxt 29 st, 4 dc in last st, dc in nxt 29 st (62)

Put marker in last st you did. Make sure the first sc of the nxt rnd goes into the first dc st and not the chain 2.

Rnd 2: sc in nxt 28 st, hdc in nxt st, dc in nxt 2 st, 2 tr in nxt st, ch 1, 2 tr in same st, dc in nxt 2 st, hdc in nxt st, sc in nxt 27 st, sl st in nxt st (after you've done the last st where the marker was).

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing.

Weave the short tail from the slip knot into the back of the stitches, trim excess. Wrap the bottom of the leaf around the halfway point of the stem and use the long tail to sew the sides together for approx 4 stitches going through the inner loop of the Vs on either side. Fasten off around a stitch in the same way as usual, weave tail through the part of the leaf you've just sewn together and come out the other side, cut yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside.

The tulips are finished! You can make several in different colours and display them in a vase like I did. I'd love to see a photo of yours, you can share it with me by tagging me on instagram @laura_wilson01
