Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClV8EmEhYlM
When made with the stated yarn weight and hook size, the finished Humpty Dumpty measures approx 13cm from the top of the hat to the bottom of the feet when sitting.
Materials needed:
DK yarn in blue, black, white, beige, red (I used Hayfield bonus DK in Denim, Black, White, Oatmeal, Ladybird and Fern green)
3mm crochet hook
5mm black safety eyes
Stitch marker
Scissors
Stuffing
Yarn needle
Pins to help with sewing
Embroidery thread in black and yellow
Abbreviations (US crochet terms):
st- stitch
ch- chain
mr- magic ring
sl st- slip stitch
sc- single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
inc- increase
invdec- invisible decrease
BLO- back loops only
FLO- front loops only
How to change colour when working in sc: Change colour as you finish the last stitch of the previous colour- push hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, pull a loop of the new colour through both loops on the hook. This completes the sc in the previous colour and changes to the new colour for the future stitches.
How to change colour on an invdec stitch: Change colour as you finish the invdec stitch in the previous colour- pick up the front loops of the next 2 stitches, yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook, pull a loop of the new colour through both loops on the hook. This completes the invdec in the previous colour and changes to the new colour.

Rnd 19: sc in every st (21)
Insert 5mm safety eyes between rnds 17 and 18, 4 stitches apart.
Make mouth now:
Cut a 20cm long piece of black embroidery thread, tie a double knot near the end and thread onto needle. Go through the inside and come out leaving 1 rnd between the eyes and where the mouth will be, in line with the inside edge of the eye. Sew 2 lines in a wide V shape and then fasten off in the usual way by going through a loop on the inside near the top edge of the work. Push tail inside.
Make belt buckle now:
Cut a 30cm long piece of yellow embroidery thread, tie a double knot near the end and thread onto needle. Go through the inside of the body and come out at the top of the black round at the front, in line with the inside edge of the eye. Sew 4 lines on in a rectangle, weaving in and out and going through the same points so that the lines meet. Fasten off in the usual way by going through a loop on the inside near the top edge of the work. Push tail inside.
Begin stuffing firmly. Continue crocheting:
Rnd 20: (sc in nxt 5 st, invdec) x3 (18)
Rnd 21: (sc in nxt st, invdec) x6 (12)
Rnd 22: (invdec) x6 (6)
Fasten off leaving tail long enough to close the hole.
Thread tail onto needle and come up through the front loops only of each of the last 6 stitches, pull tight to gather stitches together and close the hole. Find a loop nearby- go through it but not all the way, leave a loop and go through the loop from behind, pull tight to make a knot. Weave tail back through the middle of the hole you've just closed, come out at the side of the body, cut yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside.
Bow tie:
In red:
Row 1: ch 7, hdc in 3rd st from hook, sc in nxt st, sl st in nxt st, sc in nxt st, hdc in nxt st (5)
Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Weave short tail into back of stitches, trim excess. Weave the long tail to the back at the corner, sew to the top white round at the front by picking up loops from the surface and going through the red loops on the back. Fasten off by finding a loop nearby, go through it but not all the way- leave a loop and go through the loop from behind, pull tight to make a knot. Weave through the body, come out at the side, cut the yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside.
Arms- make 2:
In beige:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: sc in every st (6) Change to white as you finish last st.
Rnds 3- 9 (7 rnds): sc in every st (6) Trim the short tails when you've done a few rnds of white, push ends inside with the end of your needle.
Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Don't stuff. Flatten end.
Sew arms to the top white rnd on the sides of the body, fasten off in the same way as you did with the bow tie and weave tail inside body. Cut yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside.
Feet and legs- make 2:
Starting with the feet in black:
Rnd 1: ch 5, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 3 st, 4 sc in last st, work on other side of chain: sc in nxt 3 st (10) Put marker in last st you did and work in continuous spiral rounds.
Rnd 2: In BLO: sc in every st (10)
Rnd 3: sc in nxt 3 st, invdec, invdec, sc in nxt 3 st (8) Change to blue as you finish the last st.
Rnd 4: sc in nxt 3 st, invdec, sc in nxt 3 st (7)
Rnds 5- 14 (10 rnds): sc in every st (7) Trim the short tails when you've done a few rnds of the blue, push ends inside.
Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Don't stuff. Flatten end. Bend legs at half way point, making sure the foot is the right way.
Sew the legs to rnd 5 of the body at the front so he can sit down, approx 4 stitches apart. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Hat:
In green:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)
Rnd 3: In BLO: sc in every st (12)
Rnd 4: sc in every st (12)
Rnd 5: In FLO: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 6: sl st in every st (18)
Fasten off leaving tail for sewing.
Trim the short tail a bit and then push inside hat. Weave the long tail through to the remaining back loops on the inside and sew it to the top of the head at an angle, by picking up loops from the surface of the stitches and going through the remaining green back loops. Fasten off in the same way as usual and weave in end. Cut yarn close to the edge and push inside with your needle.
Humpty Dumpty is finished! I also painted a wall with watercolour paints and wrapped the paper around a small box and stuck it down with tape, so you could do the same if you want him to sit on a wall! I'd love to see a photo of your Humpty Dumpty, you can share it with me by tagging me on instagram @laura_wilson01
