Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UenvCgZDyg
When made with the stated yarn weight and hook size, the finished pigeon measures approx 10cm tall from the head to the bottom, and 11cm wide from the feet to the end of the tail feather.
The pigeon is made in continuous spiral rounds with a stitch marker.
The exact yarns I used were Hayfield bonus DK in: Turquoise, Light grey mix, Dark grey mix, Black, White, Peaches, Rainforest or Bottle green (I made 2 pigeons, one with each), and Yarnsmiths create DK in Dark lavender
How to change colour when working in single crochet:
Change colour as you finish the last stitch of the previous colour- push hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, pull a loop of the new colour through both loops on the hook. This completes the sc in the previous colour and changes to the new colour for the future stitches.
Materials needed:
DK yarn in turquoise, greenish blue, light purple, light grey, dark grey, black, pale pink, and a small amount of white for the beak
3mm crochet hook
5mm black safety eyes
Stitch marker
Scissors
Stuffing
Yarn needle
Pins to help with sewing
Abbreviations (US crochet terms):
st- stitch
ch- chain
mr- magic ring
sl st- slip stitch
sc- single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
inc- increase
invdec- invisible decrease
BLO- back loops only

Rnd 30: (sc in nxt st, invdec) x6 (12)
Rnd 31: (invdec) x6 (6)
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Thread tail onto needle and come up through the front loops only of each of the last 6 stitches, from the outside going upwards, pull tight to gather the stitches together and close the hole. Find a loop nearby, go through it but not all the way - leave a loop and go through it from behind, pull tight to make a knot and fasten off. Weave tail through the middle of the hole you've just closed and come out at the side of the body. Cut the yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push the end inside.
Beak:
In black:
Rnd 1: 4 sc in mr (4)
Rnds 2-3 (2 rnds): sc in every st (4)
Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Trim tail from mr.
Sew the beak to the face between rnds 6 and 7, by picking up loops from the surface of the stitches on the face and going under both loops of each stitch on the beak. Fasten off in the same way as when you closed the hole earlier, weave tail through the head, cut the yarn close to the edge and use your needle to push end inside.
White line above beak:
Cut a 30cm piece of white yarn, tie a knot near the end, thread onto needle and weave through the back of the head and come out at the side of the beak, pull through until the knot is stopped on inside. Use the end of your needle to push the end inside at back of head. Cross over to the other side so that the white goes over and around the top of the beak, find a blue loop near the edge of the beak on the same level as the other side and use it to fasten off, weave tail back through the head near where it comes out of. Cut yarn close to the edge of the work and push end inside with your needle.
Neck feathers:
With the pigeon upside down (head closest to you) pull up a loop of greenish blue in the higher up last leftover loop at the back, ch 2, hdc in same st, sl st in nxt st, (2 hdc in nxt st, sl st in nxt st) repeat part in brackets all around. Fasten off and weave in both ends.
Do exactly the same for the purple loops, using purple yarn. Fasten off and weave in both ends.
Wings- make 2:
In light grey:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)
Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4: sc in every st (18) Change to dark grey as you finish that last st, keep light grey attached.
Rnd 5: sc in every st (18) Change to light grey as you finish that last st (carry the yarn upwards from the inside)
Rnds 6- 10 (5 rnds): sc in every st (18)
Cut the dark grey yarn and tie the 2 short dark grey tails together.
Rnd 11: (sc in nxt st, invdec) x6 (12)
Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing. Don't stuff.
Flatten the wings so that the colour change will be on the inside (closest to the body) and the end where you fastened off is at the corner of the wing. Sew the wings to the sides of the body on the third grey round down after the purple round, by picking up loops from the surface on the body and going through both layers of stitches on the wings (the stitches directly opposite each other). Find a loop underneath the wing to fasten off on and weave in end, cut yarn close to edge and push end inside.
Tail feather:
In dark grey:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)
Rnd 3: (sc in nxt 3 st, inc) x3 (15)
Rnd 4: sc in every st (15)
Rnd 5: (sc in nxt 4 st, inc) x3 (18) Change to light grey as you finish the last sc of the last inc.
Rnd 6: sc in every st (18)
Rnd 7: (sc in nxt 5 st, inc) x3 (21)
Rnds 8- 11 (4 rnds): sc in every st (21)
Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.
Stuff lightly and flatten it slightly.
Use several pins to pin the tail feather to the back of the body in the middle between rnds 22 and 25, squashing it slightly flatter so it fits across those rounds. Sew it to the body by picking up loops from the surface of the stitches and going through both loops of each stitch on the tail piece. Fasten off and weave in end.
Feet- make 2:
In light pink:
Toes- make 2, fasten off on first but don't fasten off on second.
Rnd 1: 4 sc in mr (4)
Rnds 2- 3 (2 rnds): sc in every st (4)
Trim tails from mr.
Joining the toes:
Rnd 1: Place marker in last st you did on the second toe. Join to first toe with a sc in the st after where you fastened off, sc in nxt 3 st of the first toe, then sc in nxt free st of the second toe, then sc in nxt 3 st (8)
Rnd 2: sc in every st (8)
Rnd 3: (sc in nxt 2 st, invdec) x2 (6)
Fasten off leaving long tail. Trim the short end and push inside. Close hole in the same way as you did on the body, then fasten off and weave the tail through the foot, cut yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside.
Legs- make 2:
Rnd 1: 4 sc in mr (4)
Rnds 2- 3 (2 rnds): sc in every st (4)
Trim tails from mr.
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Sew the open end to the foot in the middle, fasten off using a stitch nearby and weave tail through the leg to the other end, sew to the body between rnds 23 and 24, about 7 stitches apart, so that his legs are out in front of him and he's in a sitting position. Fasten off and weave in ends.
