Crochet rooster- free pattern

When made with the stated yarn weight and hook size, the finished rooster will be approx 19cm tall.

Materials needed:

• DK yarn in light orange, red, yellow, light brown, dark brown, dark green and turquoise

• 3mm crochet hook

• 6mm black safety eyes

• Stitch marker

• Scissors

• Stuffing

• Yarn needle

• Pins to help with sewing

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

st- stitch

ch- chain

mr- magic ring

sl st- slip stitch

sc- single crochet

inc- increase

invdec- invisible decrease

BLO- back loops only

hdc- half double crochet

dc- double crochet

tr- treble crochet

Head and body, starting with the head in orange:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x6 (24)

Rnd 5: (sc in nxt 3 st, inc) x6 (30)

Rnds 6- 7 (2 rnds): sc in every st (30)

Rnd 8: (sc in nxt 9 st, inc) x3 (33)

Rnds 9- 10: (2 rnds): sc in every st (33)

Rnd 11: (sc in nxt 10 st, inc) x3 (36)

Rnds 12- 13: (2 rnds): sc in every st (36)

Rnd 14: inc, inc, sc in remaining st (38)

Rnd 15: (sc in nxt st, inc) x2, sc in remaining st (40)

Change to light brown as you finish the last st.

Rnd 16: In BLO: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x2, sc in remaining st (42)

Cut the orange yarn and tie the two short tails in a double knot.

Insert safety eyes on opposite side to where the increases are (the ones starting on rnd 14), with the increases in line with the mid point of the eyes, between rnds 7 and 8, 7 stitches apart.

Rnd 17: (sc in nxt 6 st, inc) x6 (48)

Rnd 18: sc in nxt 5 st, inc, sc in remaining st (49)

Rnd 19: sc in nxt 5 st, inc, sc in remaining st (50)

Rnd 20: sc in nxt 5 st, inc, sc in remaining st (51)

Rnd 21: sc in nxt 6 st, inc, sc in remaining st (52)

Rnd 22: sc in nxt 6 st, inc, sc in remaining st (53)

Rnd 23: sc in nxt 6 st, inc, sc in remaining st (54)

Don't fasten off, make feathers now:

Orange feathers:

Pull up a loop of orange in the last higher up front loop with the head closest to you, ch 1, sl st in same st, hdc in nxt st, (dc, tr, dc) all in nxt st, sl st in nxt st, *(sl st in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, [dc, tr, dc] all in nxt st, sl st in nxt st) repeat all around (10 shells). Fasten off and weave tails inside. Push each shell outwards from underneath.

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing.

Sew to the face in the middle of the eyes across rnds 8- 10. Fasten off and weave end through the head, cut yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside.

Comb (piece on top of head):

In red:

Row 1: ch 10, starting in second st from hook: sc in nxt 9 st (9)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, inc, sc in nxt 3 st, inc, sc in nxt 3 st, inc (12)

Row 3: ch 2, turn, hdc in nxt st, (dc, tr, dc) all in nxt st, sl st in nxt st, *(hdc in nxt st, [dc, tr, dc] all in nxt st, sl st in nxt st) x3 (4 bits)

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

Wattles: make 2:

In red:

ch 6, starting in second st from hook: sl st in nxt st, sc in nxt 3 st, 4 hdc in last st, sc in nxt 3 st, sl st in nxt 2 st (13)

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing.

Weave the short tail into the back of the stitches and cut yarn close to the edge of the work.

Tail feathers:

Long feathers- make 2 in turquoise:

ch 21, starting in 3rd chain from hook: 8 dc, 8 tr, 3 tr in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, sl st in nxt st (21)

Fasten off leaving tail.

Do reverse for the feathers on the other side- make 2 in turquoise:

ch 20, starting in 2nd chain from hook: sl st in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, 3 tr in nxt st, 8 tr, 8 dc (21)

Fasten off leaving tail.

Short feathers- make 2 in dark green:

ch 17, starting in 3rd chain from hook: 6 dc, 6 tr, 3 tr in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, sl st in nxt st (17)

Fasten off leaving tail.

Do reverse for the feathers on the other side- make 2 in dark green:

ch 16, starting in 2nd chain from hook: sl st in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, 3 tr in nxt st, 6 tr, 6 dc (17) Fasten off leaving tail.

Feet- make 2:

Middle toe- in yellow:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnds 2- 7 (6 rnds): sc in every st (6)

Fasten off leaving short tail. Trim tail from magic ring and push end inside.

Side toes- make 2 and fasten off on first toe but don't fasten off on second toe:

In yellow:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnds 2- 5 (4 rnds): sc in every st (6)

Fasten off on first toe only. Trim tail from magic ring on both toes and push ends inside.

Joining the toes:

Rnd 1: Put marker in last st you did on the toe you haven't fastened off on. Join to the long middle toe with a sc in the nxt free stitch after where you fastened off on the middle toe, sc in nxt 2 st of middle toe, join to the other side toe with a sc in the nxt free stitch after where you fastened off, sc in nxt 5 st of this toe, sc in nxt free stitch on the middle toe, sc in nxt 2 stitches, sc in nxt free st of the first toe, sc in nxt 5 st (18)

Rnd 2: sc in every st (18)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, invdec) x6 (12)

Rnd 4: sc in every st (12)

Rnd 5: (invdec) x6 (6)

Rnds 6- 8 (3 rnds): sc in every st (6)

Fasten off leaving long tail. Close hole and weave tail inside.

Legs- make 2:

In yellow:

Leave a long tail at start of slip knot for sewing later on.

Rnd 1: ch 12, join to first chain with a sc, sc in every st (12)

Rnds 2- 8 (7 rnds): sc in every st (12)

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Stuff the legs.

Thighs- make 2:

In light brown:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 5 st, inc) x3 (21)

Rnd 5: sc in every st (21)

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Stuff the thighs slightly.

Wing feathers:

Each side of the rooster has 2 in brown, 2 in orange, 1 in green and 1 in turquoise (12 in total):

ch 17, starting in 2nd st from hook: (sl st in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, (dc, tr, dc) in nxt st, sl st in nxt st) repeat until you have 4 shells in total.
