Materials needed:

  • DK yarn in purple, lilac and gold/yellow

  • 3mm crochet hook

  • Stitch marker

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

st- stitch

mr- magic ring

sc- single crochet

inc- increase

sl st- slip stitch

FLO- front loops only

How to change colour in sc: Begin to change colour in the st before it's needed- push hook in st, yarn over and pull through, then pull a loop of the new colour through the two loops on the hook. This finishes the stitch in the previous colour and changes to the new colour so all future stitches will be in the new colour.

Fasten off leaving short tail. Weave tail into the back of the stitches on the inside edge, trim excess close to the edge of the work.

Buckle on hat:

Cut a 30cm piece of gold yarn, tie a double knot near the end, thread onto needle. Come up through the inside of the hat, coming out above the lilac part, sew 4 lines in a rectangle and then a short horizontal line going to the halfway point inside the rectangle. Find a loop on the inside and fasten off by going through the loop but don't pull through all the way, leave a loop and go through it from behind, pull tight to make a knot. Trim the tail a bit and push inside.

Push the hat on the head. If you want to sew the hat to the head you can use the leftover back loops on the inside and use a length of purple yarn. I decided not to sew mine because I wanted to be able to take it off and put other hats on him, like the Mexican hat from the original pattern.
