Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__CH32um-N0

When made with the stated yarn weight and hook size, the finished T-rex is approx 15cm tall from the top of the eyebrow pieces to the floor, when standing in the position shown in the photo. It is approx 21cm long from the end of the tail to the end of the head.

I haven't used any wire for any part of the pattern, the bends in the legs are achieved by crocheting a knee joint and an ankle joint. You can choose the angle at which you sew the legs to the body depending on how you want him to stand up. He can sit on his own by using the tail like a tripod, although he has to lean against something when in the position shown in the photo.

Materials needed:

  • DK yarn in green, white and beige- I used Hayfield Bonus DK in Grass, White and Biscuit

  • 3mm crochet hook

  • 6mm black safety eyes

  • Stitch marker

  • Scissors

  • Stuffing

  • Yarn needle

  • Pins to help with sewing

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

st- stitch

ch- chain

mr- magic ring

sl st- slip stitch

sc- single crochet

inc- increase

invdec- invisible decrease

sc2tog- single crochet 2 together

BLO- back loops only

Weave in ends, cut the yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside.

Teeth on upper jaw:

Holding the top piece of the head upside down, pull up a loop of white in the 8th st after where you fastened off, (ch 3, starting in 2nd st from hook, sl st in nxt st, sc in nxt st, skip one green loop, sl st in nxt green loop) repeat until you have 9 teeth. Fasten off and weave in tails.

Cut a long piece of green yarn and sew the ends of each piece together so that the mouth is open at an angle, sew each st together, leaving one loop unsewn on each side before the teeth. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Trim tail from the mr. Fasten off leaving tail long enough to weave through to the other end and to sew it to the body later.

Claws on arms:

There will be 2 claws on each arm. Flatten end of arm and flatten the other closed end in the opposite direction so that the closed end will be flat against the body and the open end will be horizontal so the claws will curve downwards, push hook through st before the one next to where you fastened off and then through the opposite st (both layers, leaving one st between them at the corner) pull up loop of beige, ch 4, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 3 st (hold onto short tail), sl st in nxt st through both layers, ch 4, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 3 st, sl st through same stitches again (both layers). Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tail:

In green:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt st, inc) x3 (9)

Rnds 5- 6 (2 rnds): sc in every st (9)

Rnd 7: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x3 (12)

Rnds 8- 9 (2 rnds): sc in every st (12)

Rnd 10: (sc in nxt 3 st, inc) x3 (15)

Rnd 20: sc in every st (24)

Rnd 21: (sc in nxt 7 st, inc) x3 (27)

Rnd 22: sc in every st (27)

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing. Stuff. Curve the end down towards the floor.

Legs- make 2 the same:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x6 (24)

Rnd 5: sc in every st (24)

Rnd 6: (sc in nxt 6 st, invdec) x3 (21)

Rnd 7: sc in every st (21)

Rnd 8: (sc in nxt 5 st, invdec) x3 (18)

Rnd 9: sc in every st (18)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, (sc2tog) x2 (2)

Place marker in last st you did and work in continuous spiral again:

Rnd 1: sc in nxt 2 spaces between the ends of the rows down the side, sc in nxt 9 st, make 1 sc up the other side, sc in last 2 st (14)

Rnd 2: sc in nxt 12 st, invdec (13)

Rnds 3- 8 (6 rnds): sc in every st (13)

Now we're going to make the ankle joint and switch to working in rows:

Row 1: sc in nxt 10 st, ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in nxt 2 st, sc2tog (4)

Row 2: ch 1, turn (sc2tog) x2 (2)

Place marker in last st you did and work in continuous spiral again:

Rnd 1: make 2 sc down side, sc in nxt 7 st, make 1 sc up side, sc in last 2 st (12)

Rnd 2: sc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt 3 st, inc) x3 (15)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 4 st, inc) x3 (18)

Rnd 5: sc in every st (18)

Fasten off leaving a tail that's long enough to weave through the inside of the leg and come out on the inside of the thigh and then to use it to sew to the body.

Flatten top part (the thigh) so it's like a spoon with the curved inward side touching the body, then stuff the leg starting from the knee downwards. Don't stuff the feet. Flatten the top part of the other leg in the opposite direction.

Claws on feet:

Flatten end of foot, with the top of the foot facing you, push hook through both layers of stitches at the corner (stitches directly next to each other), pull up a loop of beige, (ch 4, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 3 st, skip 2 stitches on both sides, sl st through both layers in the third st) x2, ch 4, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 3 st, skip 1 stitch on both sides, sl st through both layers in nxt st. Fasten off and weave in ends. Repeat for other leg.

Assembly:

Pin each piece to the body before you sew them on to check that you're happy with the positioning and then leave them on while you sew, taking them out as you go. Pin the head to the body at an angle (looking up slightly), then pin the arms to the sides of the body on the 4th rnd down from the neck, both horizontal in a straight line and level with each other. Pin the thighs to the body on each leg using several pins, 11 rnds down from the top of the neck, at an angle. Make sure both legs are in line with each other and at the same angle. Pin the tail to the bottom of the body, 14 rnds down from the top of the neck at the back.

Sew the head to the neck by going under the V of each st and picking up loops from the surface on the bottom piece of the head. Fasten off and weave in end. Sew the arms on by picking up loops from the surface of the stitches in a straight line, only the part in contact with the body. Fasten off and weave in ends. Weave the tail from the thighs through to near the inside edge and sew to the body following the curve of the thigh in a circle, until you get back to where you started sewing. Only sew the thighs to the body. Fasten off and weave in ends. Sew the tail to the body by going under the V of each st and picking up loops from the surface of the body. Fasten off and weave in ends.
