Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz2ri6MurfI

Materials needed:

  • DK yarn in pink or a colour of your choice, and a small amount of black yarn for the mouth

  • 3mm crochet hook

  • 5mm black safety eyes (I used 5mm but 6mm would also work if you can't find 5mm)

  • Stitch marker

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

st- stitch

ch- chain

mr- magic ring

sc- single crochet

inc- increase

invdec- invisible decrease

Middle pieces- front and back:

In pink:

Rnd 1: 5 sc in mr (5)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (10)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x5 (15)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x5 (20)

Rnd 5: (sc in nxt 3 st, inc) x5 (25)

Fasten off leaving short tail. Make a second piece exactly the same but don't fasten off on that one.

Joining the pieces and starting first leg:

Place marker in last st you did. sc in nxt 4 stitches. With the right side of other piece facing you, count back 5 st from where you fastened off, sc in the 5th st, sc in nxt 4 st, take out marker and sc in that stitch (so that the right side of the stitches are always on the outside) (10)

Place marker in last stitch you did.

Continue with first leg:

Rnds 1-3 (3 rnds): sc in every st (10)

Rnd 4: sc in nxt 3 st, invdec, sc in nxt 3 st, invdec (8)

Rnds 5-7 (3 rnds): sc in every st (8)

Rnd 8: invdec, sc in nxt 2 st, invdec, sc in nxt 2 st (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail (approx 20cm). Thread tail onto needle and come up through the front loop only of each of the last 6 stitches, pull tight to gather the stitches together and close the hole. Find a loop nearby, go through it but not all the way, leave a loop and go through the loop from behind, pull tight to make a knot. Weave tail through the middle of where the hole was and come out at the side of the leg, cut yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push end inside and hide it.

Insert safety eyes in middle of face. Cut a 30cm long piece of black yarn, tie a double knot near the end of it. Thread onto needle, come up through the middle of the two pieces and come out 2 rnds below the eyes, make 2 diagonal lines in a wide V shape for the mouth, going back through the same point where the other line ended. Then find a loop on the inside on the back of a st, go through it but not all the way- leave a loop and go through the loop from behind, pull tight to make a knot. Trim all of the tails a bit and push inside the middle bit.

Repeat for other 4 edges of pentagon, by pulling up loop in the st nxt to the previous leg, with the front facing you (the side with the face on), ch 1, sc in same st, sc in nxt 4 st, turn the work and cross over to other side, count 5 stitches ahead from the other leg and sc in the 5th st (making sure all stitches have the right side facing outwards), sc in nxt 4 st, put marker in last st you did, then repeat from rnd 1-8. (Each leg starts with a joining round of 10 st, then you begin from rnd 1). Close the hole at the end of each leg and weave in the ends. When you've done all 5 legs, weave the tail from where you fastened off on the back piece through the middle.
