Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el8L8Na0Zuc

Materials needed:

  • DK yarn in beige/ light brown, orange and white

  • 3mm crochet hook

  • 6mm black safety eyes

  • Stuffing

  • Stitch marker

  • Scissors

  • Sewing needle

  • Wire- I used 18 gauge florist wire

  • Pliers with wire cutters

  • Fabric glue to stop the legs from moving inside the body

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

  • st- stitch

  • rnd- round

  • ch- chain

  • mr- magic ring

  • sc- single crochet

  • inc- increase

  • invdec- invisible decrease

  • sc2tog- single crochet 2 together

  • sl st- slip stitch

  • cto- change to orange

  • ctb- change to beige

  • ctw- change to white

The colour is always changed when finishing the last stitch of the previous colour. When changing colour, cut and tie the yarn together in a double knot on the inside each time you change colour, if you work the other colour into the back of the stitches it will make the stitches thicker and increase the size of the robin overall, and then the wings will be too small for the body, so although it takes a bit more time it's necessary for this pattern. I found that when I tried to carry the yarn over by crossing it over it ended up pulling the piece out of shape so I wouldn't recommend using that method. Take a look at my Youtube video if you need any help with the colour changing.

Head and body, starting with the head:

In beige:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: sc in nxt 5 st, inc, sc in nxt 5 st, inc, cto as you finish that second st of the increase, sc in nxt 5 st, inc, ctb as you finish last st (21)

Rnd 5: sc in nxt 14 st, cto, sc in nxt 7 st, ctb (21)

Rnd 6: Repeat rnd 5 (21)

Rnd 7: sc in nxt 6 st, inc, sc in nxt 6 st, inc, cto, sc in nxt 6 st, inc, ctb (24)

Insert eyes between rnds 5-6 on the orange part, so that there are 4 visible stitches between them.

Rnd 8: sc in nxt 7 st, inc, sc in nxt 7 st, inc (do the first sc of the inc in beige, then cto and do 2nd sc of increase), sc in nxt 7 st, inc, ctb (27)

Rnd 9: sc in nxt 8 st, inc, sc in nxt 8 st, ctw, sc in nxt st, cto, sc in same st, sc in nxt 8 st, ctw, sc in nxt st, ctb, sc in same st (30)

Rnd 10: sc in nxt 9 st, inc, sc in nxt 8 st, ctw, sc in nxt st, inc, cto, sc in nxt 8 st, ctw, sc in nxt st, inc, ctb (33)

Rnd 11: sc in nxt 10 st, inc, sc in nxt 8 st, ctw, sc in nxt 2 st, inc, sc in nxt st, cto, sc in nxt 6 st, ctw, sc in nxt 3 st, inc, ctb (36)

Rnds 12-15 (4 rnds): sc in nxt 20 st, ctw, sc in nxt 16 st, ctb (36)

Rnd 16: sc in nxt 10 st, ch 6, skip 6 st, sc in 7th st, sc in nxt 3 st, ctw, sc in remaining stitches (36) *the chains count as stitches and will be used later to make the tail. In the next round: use the sides of the chain stitches as normal stitches when doing the invdec stitches (there will only be one invdec on the chain part), this might be more fiddly than a normal invdec st.

Begin stuffing and continue as you decrease.

In white from now on:

Rnd 17: (sc in nxt 4 st, invdec) x6 (30)

Rnd 18: (sc in nxt 3 st, invdec) x6 (24)

Rnd 19: (sc in nxt 2 st, invdec) x6 (18)

Rnd 20: (sc in nxt st, invdec) x6 (12)

Rnd 21: (invdec) x6 (6)

Fasten off leaving tail long enough to close hole. Thread tail onto needle and come up through the front loops only of each stitch on the last round from the outside, pull tight to gather the stitches together and close the hole. Find a loop nearby, go through it but not all the way- leave a loop and go through it from behind, pull tight to make a knot. This fastens off, weave tail through the middle of where the hole was, cut the yarn close to the edge of the work and use the end of your needle to push the end inside.

Tail feather:

Rnd 1: With the robins head closest to you (upside down), pull up a loop of beige in the corner sc st of the opening at the back, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in remaning 11 stitches, put marker in last st you did (12)

Rnds 2-3 (2 rnds): sc in every st (12)

Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 st, invdec) x3 (9)

Rnds 5- 8 (4 rnds): sc in every st (9)

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing. Flatten tail, don't stuff. Sew the end together in a straight line by going through both layers of stitches. Fasten off and weave in end.

Wings:

Make 2, in beige:

Row 1: ch 3, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 2 st (2)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, (inc) x2 (4)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, inc, sc in nxt 2 st, inc (6)

Rows 4- 9 (6 rows): ch 1, turn, sc in nxt 6 st (6)

Row 10: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in nxt 2 st, sc2tog (4)

Row 11: ch 1, turn, (sc2tog) x2 (2)

sc around the edge of the whole wing by going in the spaces between the ends of the rows (see video if you need help with this part), when you get back to the top, sc in the first proper sc st, then sl st in the last st (the last sc of the row 11 (24)

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing. Weave in the short tail from the slip knot into the back of the stitches on the inside of the wing, trim excess. Pin both wings to the body at rnd 8/9, when you're happy with the position, sew only the top half of each wing to the body (the top curve) by picking up loops from the surface of the stitches on the body and going through the V's on the wing. Fasten off and weave end through body, trim excess and push end inside with your needle.

Beak:

In brown:

Row 1: ch 3, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 2 st (2)

Fasten off leaving tail and sew edges together, fasten off but leave the long tail for sewing to the face. Weave the short tail inside the beak and trim excess, push end inside. Sew beak to the face in between the eyes, across rounds 5 and 6. Fasten off and weave end inside body.

Legs:

See my Youtube video to find out how to bend the wire and make the legs.
