Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nyVhLTWeh8
When made with the stated yarn weight and hook size, the finished spider will be approx 7.5cm from the head to the end of the body and 9cm wide from one leg to the opposite leg.
I made the black spider without using wire in the legs and I found that it held its shape fairly well when I bent them but I used wire for the purple spider and the legs have a more definite shape, it's up to you which style you prefer.
All pieces are worked in continuous spiral rounds with a stitch marker.
Materials needed:
DK yarn in a colour of your choice- I made one spider in black and one in purple (it can be harder to see your stitches with black yarn)
3mm crochet hook
6mm black safety eyes
Stitch marker
Scissors
Stuffing
Sewing needle- appropriate size for the yarn
2mm diameter aluminium armature wire for the legs
Pliers with wire cutters
Pins to help with sewing
Abbreviations (US crochet terms):
st- stitch
mr- magic ring
sc- single crochet
inc- increase
invdec- invisible decrease
Head:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)
Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x6 (24)
Rnds 5- 7 (3 rnds): sc in every st (24)
Insert safety eyes between rnds 5 and 6, 4-5 stitches apart.
Rnd 8: (sc in nxt 2 st, invdec) x6 (18)
Begin stuffing as you go
Rnd 9: (sc in nxt st, invdec) x6 (12)
Rnd 10: (invdec) x6 (6)
Fasten off leaving a tail long enough for closing the hole and sewing the head to the body.
Thread tail onto needle, come up through the front loops only of each of the 6 stitches on the last rnd, pull tight to gather stitches together and close hole. Find a loop nearby, go through it but not all the way- leave a loop and go through the loop from behind, pull tight to make a knot, this fastens off. Weave tail through head and come out at the back of the head. Don't cut the tail, you'll need this for sewing it to the body.
Body:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)
Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)
Rnd 4: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x6 (24)
Rnd 5: (sc in nxt 3 st, inc) x6 (30)
Rnd 6: (sc in nxt 4 st, inc) x6 (36)
Rnds 7- 9 (3 rnds): sc in every st (36)
Rnd 10: (sc in nxt 4 st, invdec) x6 (30)
Begin stuffing as you go.
Rnd 11: (sc in nxt 3 st, invdec) x6 (24)
Rnd 12: (sc in nxt 2 st, invdec) x6 (18)
Rnd 13: (sc in nxt st, invdec) x6 (12)
Rnd 14: (invdec) x6 (6)
Fasten off leaving tail and close hole in the same way as with the head. Fasten off and weave in end.
Spider web on top of body:
See my Youtube video to help with this.
Cut a 90cm long piece of white yarn, tie a double knot near the end, thread onto needle, go through the underside of the body and pull through until the knot is stopped on the inside. Use the end of your needle or scissors to push that short end inside and hide it.
Start by making the straight lines- come out where you want the end of the line to be, go through on the opposite side and come out where you want the next line to start, continue in this way making a + shape, then make an X over it (4 lines). Then start making the inner circle by making short lines, weaving through and then going back in the same spaces to make the next line. Then weave through to near the end of the lines and make the outer circle. Fasten off in the same way as before by finding a loop on the underside, weave in tail and push end inside.
Sew the body to the head- make sure the top side of both pieces is where the magic ring from round 1 is and not where you closed the holes. Place one flat edge of the hexagon shape onto another flat edge of the body and go in a straight line picking up loops from the surface of the stitches, then go down to the round below and sew in a straight line to make sure the head doesn't move too much. Fasten off in the same way as before and weave in end.
Legs- make 8:
Rnd 1: 4 sc in mr (4)
Rnds 2- 9 (8 rnds): sc in every st (4)
Fasten off leaving tail. Trim tail from magic ring.
Place the wire next to each leg and use the wire cutting part of the pliers to cut the wire so that it's slightly shorter than the leg, so that it will fit inside. Push inside each leg. Bend each leg at the half way point, at a right angle.
Sew 4 legs onto each side of the body (you can use pins to plan out where you want them) by picking up loops from the surface of the stitches on the body and going under the V of each of the 4 stitches on the last rnd of the leg, sew across 2 rnds of the body. Fasten off in the same way as before and weave inside the body.
