Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern:

Materials needed:

DK yarn- I used light pink, light green and a darker green for the back, and for the other flower I used light 3 shades of purple and the same darker green for the back

3mm crochet hook

Stitch marker

Sewing needle (big enough for the yarn)

Scissors

18 gauge florist wire- comes in standard length- 36cm

Green florist tape (this is crepe paper with wax on it which becomes sticky from the warmth of your fingers and when stretched)

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

st- stitch

ch- chain

mr- magic ring

sl st- slip stitch

sc- single crochet

inc- increase

BLO- back loops only

FLO- front loops only

Middle piece:

In light green (or dark purple):

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: In BLO: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: In BLO: sc in every st (18)

Fasten off leaving short tail.

Pull up loop of pink (or light purple) in first remaining front loop after rnd 2, (ch 1, sl st in nxt st) repeat for all remaining front loops (2 rnds) sl st in last front loop. Don't fasten off if you want the petals to be in the same colour, fasten off if you want them to be in a different colour (like the lilac one), and pull up a loop of lilac in that same loop you just sl st in. Thread short tail onto needle and weave through to the back.

Make petals now:

Rnd 1: (ch 9, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 8 st, in FLO on green stitches: sl st in nxt 2 st) repeat around (9 petals)

Rnd 2: sl st in each loop from the side of the chain, starting at the bottom where it looks like a small loop, the last loop will be from the first chain that was skipped (9), sl st through both loops down the sc side (8), sl st in the 2 sl st, repeat all around (9 petals)

If you want the petals to be the same colour, don't fasten off, otherwise fasten off and pull up a loop of the petal colour in the last green st you worked in. Make the second layer of petals by using the remaining green/purple loops on the back: sl st in first loop, ch 9 and repeat rnd 1 and 2 (9 petals). The second layer of petals should be in between the gaps of the first layer (18 petals in total) After last petal just sl st in the 1 remaing st rather than 2.

Fasten off leaving short tail.

Green back part:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt st, inc) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: sc every st, sl st in nxt st (18)

Fasten off leaving tail for sewing.

Sew to the back by picking up pink loops from where the petals are joined. Fasten off by finding a loop, go through it but don't pull through all the way, go through the loop from behind and pull tight to create a knot, weave tail through inside and trim excess. Use end of needle to push end inside.

Stem:

Take the florist wire and measure 5cm from the end, bend it at this point, then push the short end into the middle of the magic ring on the back of the flower and come out in between that round and the next round, pull through and bend the short end close to the long end. Take the florist tape and wind it tightly around both pieces of wire to begin with and then the single piece of wire, pulling it down at an angle as you wrap it around the whole length of the wire. The tape will become sticky when it's stretched and with the heat of your hands. When you get to the bottom, leave a couple of inches of extra tape and cut it at an angle.

Take the green yarn and start winding it very tightly around the stem, starting several inches in from the end (leave this for securing later on). The yarn will stick to the tape but make sure to do this as soon as you've put the tape on because it loses its stickiness after a while. When you get to the bottom cut the yarn so that there's 1cm left and cut it in line with the end of the wire, use the excess tape to wrap it around the yarn to secure it.

Thread the green yarn at the top onto the needle and make sure it's wrapped around as close to the back of the daisy as possible, then find a loop nearby and fasten off around it in the same way as you fastened off before, then weave the end through the flower and trim the excess.

Now you can bend the wire at a slight angle at the point where the wire stops being double thickness.

The gerberas are finished and you can now display them in your favourite vase. I'd love to see a photo of your flowers, you can share them with me by tagging me on instagram @laura_wilson01
