Materials needed:

DK yarn- I used green, lilac, dark purple, light yellow, light pink and light purple

3mm crochet hook

Stitch marker

Scissors

Yarn needle

18 gauge florist wire- comes in standard length- 36cm

Green florist tape (this is crepe paper with wax on it which becomes sticky from the warmth of your fingers and when stretched)

Abbreviations (US crochet terms):

st- stitch

mr- magic ring

ch- chain

sl st- slip stitch

sc- single crochet

inc- increase

invdec- invisible decrease

hdc- half double crochet

dc- double crochet

FLO- front loops only

Middle back piece:

In green:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (sc in nxt 2 st, inc) x4 (16)

Change to dark purple as you finish that last sc (or light purple if you're making the pink flower), cut the green yarn leaving short tail.

Rnd 4: In FLO: sc in every st, in both loops: sl st in nxt st (16)

Fasten off leaving short tail.

Yellow piece:

Rnd 1: Pull up a loop of light yellow in nxt remaining back loop, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in all remaining stitches, place marker in last st you did (16)

Rnd 2: (sc in nxt 2 st, invdec) x4 (12)

Push the short tails inside.

Rnd 3: (invdec) x6 (6)

Fasten off leaving tail, thread onto needle and come up through the FLO of each st on the last rnd, pull tight to gather the stitches together and close the hole. Find a loop nearby and go through it but don't pull through all the way, leave a loop and go through the loop from behind, pull tight to make a knot. Weave through the middle and cut excess, use the end of your needle to push the end inside.

Petals:

Rnd 1: With the yellow part facing you, pull up a loop of petal colour (lilac or light pink) in last dark purple sl st you did, (ch 9, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 8 st, sl st in nxt 2 st on the purple part) repeat all around- 8 petals. When you get back to the beginning, put the marker in the last sl st you did.

Rnd 2: Work these stitches back up the side of the chain, starting in the first chain at the bottom which will look small: sl st, sc, hdc in nxt 2 st, dc in nxt 4 st, ch 4, sl st in side post of that last dc you just did (close to the bottom of it), ch 4, sl st in top chain, ch 4, now work in both loops: dc in nxt 4 st, hdc in nxt 2 st, sc, sl st, sl st in nxt 2 sl st. Repeat all around- 8 petals.

Fasten off and weave ends through the middle.

Stem:

Take the florist wire and measure 5cm from the end, bend it at this point, then push the short end into the middle of the magic ring on the back of the flower and come out in between that round and the next round, pull through and bend the short end close to the long end. Take the florist tape and wind it tightly around both pieces of wire to begin with and then the single piece of wire, pulling it down at an angle as you wrap it around the whole length of the wire. The tape will become sticky when it's stretched and with the heat of your hands. When you get to the bottom, leave a couple of inches of extra tape and cut it at an angle.

Take the green yarn and start winding it very tightly around the stem, starting several inches in from the end (leave this for securing later on). The yarn will stick to the tape but make sure to do this as soon as you've put the tape on because it loses its stickiness after a while. When you get to the bottom cut the yarn so that there's 1cm left and cut it in line with the end of the wire, use the excess tape to wrap it around the yarn to secure it.

Thread the green yarn at the top onto the needle and make sure it's wrapped around as close to the back of the flower as possible, then find a loop nearby and fasten off around it in the same way as you fastened off before, then weave the end through the flower and trim the excess.

Now you can bend the wire at a slight angle at the point where the wire stops being double thickness.

The cosmos flowers are finished and you can now display them in your favourite vase. I'd love to see a photo of your flowers, you can share them with me by tagging me on instagram @laura_wilson01
