Check out my Youtube video tutorial for this pattern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ1RPgd8JKA
Materials needed:
DK yarn in bright pink, light pink, light yellow and green
3mm crochet hook
Stitch marker
Yarn needle
Scissors
18 gauge florist wire- comes in standard length- 36cm
Green florist tape (this is crepe paper with wax on it which becomes sticky from the warmth of your fingers and when stretched)
Abbreviations (US crochet terms):
st- stitch
rnd- round
ch- chain
sl st- slip stitch
sc- single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
dc- double crochet
tr- treble crochet
inc- increase
invdec- invisible decrease
FLO- front loops only
How to change colour in sc:
Change colour as you finish the last st of the current colour: push hook through st, yarn over and pull through, you’ll have 2 loops on the hook, pull through a loop of the new colour to complete the sc, the next st will be in the new colour.
How to do loop stitch:
Push hook into stitch, bring yarn behind hook and then in front, then grab the piece that's going over your finger with the hook and pull both strands through the stitch, take your finger out of the loop (you can pull on the working yarn to make the loop smaller if needed and pull on one side of the loop to make it bigger), you'll have 3 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. Try to make each loop the same size. See my Youtube video where I show how to do loop stitch.
Petals- make 6:
In bright pink:
Rnd 1: ch 13, starting in 2nd st from hook: sc in nxt 3 st, hdc in nxt st, dc in nxt 2 st, 2 tr in nxt st, dc in nxt 2 st, hdc in nxt 2 st, 2 sc in last st, work on other side of chain:
2 sc in nxt st, hdc in nxt 2 st, dc in nxt 2 st, 2 tr in nxt st, dc in nxt 2 st, hdc in nxt st, sc in nxt 3 st, change to light pink as you finish the last sc, put marker in last st you did. Cut the bright pink yarn leaving a long tail for sewing later.
Rnd 2: sl st in nxt st, sc in nxt 2 st, make 3 sc in each of the nxt 7 st, sc in nxt 3 st, sl st in nxt st, sc in nxt 2 st, make 3 sc in each of the nxt 9 st, sc in nxt 2 st, sl st in nxt st, sl st in the first sl st that you did. Fasten off leaving a short tail. Weave in all short tails through the back of the stitches, trim excess close to the edge of the work.
The end where you fastened off with the light pink is the top of the petal, the other end will be sewn to the middle of the flower.
Middle back piece:
In green:
Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)
Rnd 3: sc in every st, change to yellow as you finish last st (12) Cut green yarn leaving short tail.
Rnd 4: In FLO: loop stitch in every st (12)
Rnd 5: Using the remaining green back loops: sc in every st (12)
Rnd 6: (invdec) x6 (6)
Fasten off leaving tail for closing hole. Weave short green ends inside.
Thread yellow tail onto needle, come up through the FLO of each st on the last rnd, pull tight to gather stitches together and close hole, find a loop nearby, go through it but not all the way, leave a small loop and go through the loop from behind, pull tight to make a knot, this fastens off. Weave end inside, trim excess.
You can cut the yellow loops at the half way point at the top if you'd like them to be straight strands, or you can leave them as loops. They won't come out because of the way we did the loop stitch.
Sew each petal on to the yellow stitches on the outer edge, using the bright pink tails. Use 2 stitches for each petal. Fasten off and weave in ends. Using one long pink tail, weave through the back of a stitch on each petal at the bottom and pull tight to gather them closer together, then fasten off and weave in end. This will stop the petals flopping backwards.
Stem:
Take the florist wire and measure 5cm from the end, bend it at this point, then push the short end into the middle of the magic ring on the back of the flower and come out in between that round and the next round, pull through and bend the short end close to the long end. Take the florist tape and wind it tightly around both pieces of wire to begin with and then the single piece of wire, pulling it down at an angle as you wrap it around the whole length of the wire. The tape will become sticky when it's stretched and with the heat of your hands. When you get to the bottom, leave a couple of inches of extra tape and cut it at an angle.
Take the green yarn and start winding it very tightly around the stem, starting several inches in from the end (leave this for securing later on). The yarn will stick to the tape but make sure to do this as soon as you've put the tape on because it loses its stickiness after a while. When you get to the bottom cut the yarn so that there's 1cm left and cut it in line with the end of the wire, use the excess tape to wrap it around the yarn to secure it.
Thread the green yarn at the top onto the needle and make sure it's wrapped around as close to the back of the flower as possible, then find a loop nearby and fasten off around it in the same way as you fastened off before, then weave the end through the flower and trim the excess.
The clematis flowers are finished and you can now display them in your favourite vase. I'd love to see a photo of your flowers, you can share them with me by tagging me on instagram @laura_wilson01
